The Pig Spleen Prognosticator’s report says rain is expected May 20 and June will be more normal in temperatures with a cold and wet spell predicted for June 17-20.

ASSINIBOIA— Spring weather – will we be blown away with the forecast, or is Mother Nature going to rain on our parade of happiness that winter has left us? In Saskatchewan, we are accustomed to knowing the weather is as unpredictable as the prairie winds.

Depending on which weather resource you rely on, spring is said to be warmer than normal, with periodic thunderstorms in May.

Late spring moisture from rain and snow got mixed reviews as some farmers were preparing for seeding operations, although precipitation in any form is never unwelcome.

The website almanac.com says the prairie forecast includes warmer-than-normal temperatures in May. Precipitation will be less than normal on the east side and greater than normal on the west. Their forecast for snow in early April was accurate.

To be more specific, this website offers a more detailed forecast for May.

May 1-14

T-storms, then sunny; turning warm

May 15-21

Sunny east, intervals of t-storms, some heavy west; very warm

May 22-31

Showers, very warm east; t-storms, warm west

May

temperature 12.5°C (3°C above avg. east, avg. west)
precipitation 62.5mm (35mm below avg. east, 60mm above west)

The popular weather resource, Farmersalmanac.com predicts quite cool weather May 1-3. Showers from the Rockies, May 4-7, will move east across the prairies. May 8-11, this weather resource is calling for unsettled weather over Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Generally fair skies should prevail mid-May, with some rain predicted to mar Victoria Day festivities across the prairies. Pleasant weather is forecast towards the end of May.

However, those who depend on the accuracy of the annual pig spleen forecast, which was bang on accurate with both precipitation predictions in April, including the late snow, say that May will remain cool up to May 10.

The Pig Spleen Prognosticator’s report says rain is expected May 20, and June will be more normal in temperatures, with a cold and wet spell predicted for June 17-20.

A sense of jovial fun was added to the end of what some call an unorthodox forecasting method, stating, “You are better off to trust Saskatchewan pigs, the window and luck, for your short-term weather forecasts.”
