Estevan traffic stop leads to impaired driving, drug charges

Police dealt with impaired driving, theft infractions in recent days.

ESTEVAN — A 23-year-old Manitoba man has been charged following a June 27 traffic stop.

Estevan Police Service members conducted the stop to check for sobriety. The individual was determined to be suspended from driving and the vehicle he was driving was unregistered. While police were speaking with him they noted signs of impairment. The driver failed an approved screening device test at the roadside and he was arrested for impaired driving.

Police also located a small amount of cocaine on the driver’s person after his arrest. He was subsequently processed and released, and will attend Estevan Provincial Court at a later date to speak to the charges.

In other recent police news, the EPS received an anonymous report June 25 of a motorcycle speeding and being driven erratically on King Street. The vehicle was located and the driver was cautioned about his actions.

A domestic disturbance at a local park required police attendance to mediate the situation. All parties left the scene without incident and the EPS said nothing criminal occurred.

Two suspicious males were reported to be walking down alleys and looking in backyards. EPS members located the individuals and determined they were out looking for cans to recycle. They were cautioned about entering private property without permission and sent on their way.

A bicycle was reported stolen from a carport alongside a residence in Estevan. The matter remains under investigation.

A traffic stop during June 25-26 nightshift resulted in a 67-year old man being arrested for impaired driving. During the investigation, the driver provided breath samples with results of 0.13 and 0.12, and was subsequently charged, processed and released from custody. His driver's licence was suspended and his vehicle seized as a result of the investigation.

Multiple compliance checks were conducted on individuals bound by court-ordered conditions. All were found to be at their approved residence and complying with their respective conditions.

A report of a stolen bicycle resulted in the June 26 arrest of a male for theft and the bike was recovered. The accused was subsequently charged and released, and will appear in Estevan Provincial Court to speak to the matter at a later date.

A report of an abandoned vehicle near the dog park was received. Upon arrival, the vehicle was no longer present.

EPS members assisted social services with transporting a family requiring assistance.

A false alarm at a local store was attended to by members. The location was found to be secure and no signs of forced entry were observed.

The EPS received a report June 27 of a female screaming in the street near the court house.  Members attended, warned her about her behaviour and sent her on her way.

A mischief is under investigation. A vehicle passing another caused rocks to be tossed up.

Officers attended to a residence following a 911 call from a youth experiencing a mental health crisis. Following interaction with police, the youth was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital for further assessment.

Police conducted a well-being check on a man after friends had received concerning texts from him. The man was found to be safe and well and had only sent the concerning messages out of anger.

EPS members attended to a central Estevan apartment complex regarding youths behaving erratically and acting belligerently towards cleaning staff. On arrival, police spoke with one individual and cautioned him about causing a disturbance and being loud.

Police received a report of a generator running in a backyard at three in the morning. Police attended, warned the homeowner of the bylaw and told him to shut the generator off, which he did.

Police responded to a report of a theft from a store in east Estevan. The suspect has been identified through surveillance camera footage obtained from the business and charges for a theft under $5,000 have been laid. He will be arrested and formally charged when located.

Police responded to a report of a female passed out behind a bank. Members attended

and found the female was capable of taking care of herself, so was sent home to sleep.

The EPS received a report June 29 of an individual receiving harassing communications from a scammer. No personal information was provided and no financial loss occurred. The matter has been referred to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

A report of an assault was received by EPS. The matter remains under investigation.

Multiple conditions checks were conducted during the nightshift. A curfew check of an individual resulted in charges for failing to comply with a release order when the individual was found to be not home as required.

A female was observed to be urinating in public on 13th Avenue during nightshift. She was issued a bylaw ticket and sent home.
