SASKATOON — Locally owned Zak’s Home Hardware is set to open a second location in Saskatoon, this time at the former Peavey Mart store on 51st Street. The Saskatchewan-based family business has served the province for nearly four decades.
Zak’s Building Group marketing manager Majken Cooke told SaskToday that the Zak’s Group of Companies, owned by the Zacharias family since 1986, is continuing to expand its provincial presence.
“The opportunity arose, the history of Peavey Mart’s sales success in that location, and the expansion of our brand presence from a single store on Central Avenue. Zak’s continues to grow while maintaining its commitment to local values and personalized service,” said Cooke.
“The new location would provide building materials, since the Central Avenue location doesn’t carry lumber and building materials, nor does it have a garden centre. We are guided by the mission of working hard to build relationships and communities.”
The new store, which offers more space, will give Saskatoon another Canadian hardware option and create about 30 jobs, including a store manager position.
The company is leasing the property and is currently renovating, making improvements and installing fixtures. With plans to open by late fall, the team is preparing to deliver exceptional customer service to loyal patrons.
Cooke noted that since the new location was previously a Peavey Mart—a well-known national retail chain—it offers an advantage, as many customers already know the address and how to get there, especially those in nearby neighbourhoods like Silverwood Heights.
“We are confident that this location is highly accessible to our target audience. The inherent traffic on 51st, which is similar in volume to Idylwyld, and surrounding residential communities will primarily benefit, with ancillary target customer audiences in focus,” said Cooke.
Zak’s chief retail officer, Wyatt Zacharias, said in a statement that it is unfortunate to see Peavey Mart close all its stores, given its heritage. However, he said Zak’s is honoured to carry forward its tradition of community support.
“We recognize a natural crossover in product selection. We are committed to offering goods and services that support Canadian suppliers, home building, renovation and family life—including features like a children’s play centre,” said Zacharias.
Cooke also noted that American tariffs will have a limited impact on their stores, as Zak’s remains focused on supporting local businesses.
“As part of a national buying group, with a focus on Canadian products, we don’t anticipate that the product segments most impacted will harm our overall image or financial strategy,” said Cooke.
The new Zak’s Home Hardware Building Centre will feature a BeautiTone Paint Centre, Home Design Gallery, housewares and giftware, a full-service seasonal garden centre, and a hardware section with an emphasis on LMB (lumber and building materials) for local contractors and DIY enthusiasts.
