Police arrest suspect in stolen vehicle incident after hour-long chase

The incident began near Wiggins Avenue South and ended at Valley Road.

SASKATOON — A male suspect who was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle was apprehended by Saskatoon police on Wednesday morning after an almost hour-long car chase that began near the Holliston neighbourhood and ended near Valley Road.

Shortly before 8 a.m., the Saskatoon Police Service responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the area of Wiggins Avenue South and Cascade Street. Officers located the vehicle and attempted to block it, but the driver refused to stop.

A car chase ensued, involving more than 15 police cruisers. The driver rammed one of the cruisers at the corner of Avenue D and 22nd Street, as police made multiple attempts to disable the vehicle.

Saskatoon Fire Department crews responded quickly, assisted the officer driving the cruiser, and began clearing debris from the road.

SPS officers eventually succeeded in their de-escalation efforts on Circle Drive near Valley Road, and the suspect was taken into custody.

The SPS is in the process of notifying the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team after some officers discharged their service-issued firearms.

Multiple civilian and police vehicles were damaged, and the extent of injuries and damage is currently unknown.

Traffic restrictions remain in place near Valley Road, and motorists are asked to follow police direction.
