REGINA — Regina Police Service is hiring alternative response officers.
The Regina Police Service says the role of an Alternative Response Officer is a dynamic one where they work alongside police officers, helping to keep the city safe through a mix of enforcement and support work.
"One day you might be connecting with vulnerable community members and helping them find the resources they need and the next, you could be assisting at a crime scene or transporting individuals in custody," states a post on the RPS Recruiting Facebook page.
These positions are open to people of at least 19 years of age, who have completed Grade 12 or a Grade 12 equivalent, who are legally entitled to work in Canada, and who hold a current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification. There are also visual acuity standards to meet
Alternative Response Officers must also have no criminal record and be free from criminal involvement in the three preceding years at time of application, must submit to a polygraph examination, pass a written medical and physical examination, have a good command of English, and hold a valid Saskatchewan driver's license.
The ARO unit is a new tier of community policing added to the city of Regina in the fall of 2024. The AROS work in conjunction with police officers, delivering public safety programming in instances where an armed police officer isn’t required. The unit is also in place to increase the availability of armed police officers to respond to calls for service.
ARO’s receive 11 weeks of training, both in classroom and in the field, including learning de-escalation techniques, community engagement strategies, defensive tactics, law and cross-cultural competencies.
