REGINA – A grieving mother is pleading for support after her 22-year-old son, Wahkia Ewalk, was fatally shot in what police describe as a targeted attack.

Carleen Ewalk has launched a GoFundMe to help cover funeral costs, support her son’s pregnant wife and young children, and assist the family in attending the upcoming trial.

“He was shot from behind by some gang members, he didn’t know them,” said his mother.

The fatal shooting occurred in the early hours of May 30 on Marshall Crescent. Regina Police Service officers responded to reports of gunfire and found Wahkia deceased outside a home.

Two suspects, Angus Fox, 32, and Herb Fox, 34, were arrested in Edmonton, Alta., on June 3. Angus Fox is charged with first-degree murder and Herb Fox is charged with accessory after the fact to murder.

Both accused are being transported back to Regina.

The family held a wake on Oceanman First Nation on June 4, with the funeral on June 5 at the Oceanman Band Hall.

Wahkia, a devoted father, was described as a kind-hearted man who loved animals and often helped those in need. He was attending school to complete his Grade 12 education at the time of his death.

Carleen hopes her son will be remembered as a loving father, husband, and selfless protector. She said his loyalty was unmatched and he was the backbone of their family.

“He was loyal to everyone he cared about,” she added. “He always stopped to help the homeless. Even if it wasn’t very much he still helped with what he had. He put everybody before himself.”

$14,000 has been launched. So far, $890 has been raised.
