KERROBERT — The senior girls' basketball team at Kerrobert Composite School may not have won at Hoopla this year, but the way the team worked together throughout the season was something to be recognized.
Each year, the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) partners with SaskMilk to present a team with the Sportsmanship Award, which demonstrates the ideals of sportsmanship at provincial championships.
A committee is formed with SHSAA representatives, the provincial host committee and game officials. This committee observes the players, coaches, team personnel and spectators throughout the championship.
The school held a special assembly on May 7, welcoming SHSAA executive director Dave Sandomirsky for the banner presentation. He took a moment to talk about the team’s qualities that stood out to the committee.
“They carried themselves with pride and emulated good sportsmanship to opposing teams, officials and each other on the teams while hosting regional playoffs and again at Hoopla.”
For KCS principal Candice Kraft, a banner such as this reflects more on just the senior girls’ basketball team.
“As a teacher, coach and principal, this banner is something that makes me very proud and it represents us in a very positive way, not only for our athletics program but for our school as well.”
The assembly included remarks from the coaches, Troy Snider and Kate Snider, and captains Savannah Braithwaite and Journee Milne before students were treated to a small carton of milk from SHSAA.
