SASKATOON — Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding said they are looking forward to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s third visit to the city on June 2, when he will hold separate meetings with his cabinet and all 13 premiers.

Kaeding, also the minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Research Council, was in Saskatoon on May 8, to attend the SRC’s launch of its Indigenous Workforce Program.

Kaeding told SaskToday that Premier Scott Moe has a long list of issues he wants to discuss with Carney, including tariffs and trade with the United States, how to engage with China, and how to improve business relations.

“Premier Moe has been [carrying on the conversation] ... and engaging with ... elected officials, explaining how integrated our marketplaces are, and ultimately what the effects of the tariffs will be,” said Kaeding.

Kaeding added that the provincial government wants the federal government also to reach out to China and begin discussions to reduce or eliminate the tariffs imposed on Canadian aluminum, canola, pork, seafood and steel.

“We know, through our engagement with Chinese officials, that that has to happen at the federal level, at the national level, with Prime Minister Carney reaching out to President Xi immediately to start that conversation,” said Kaeding.

June 2 will mark Carney's first time visiting Western Canada after after the Liberal Party was given a fourth straight mandate, as well as after the rise of separatist sentiment in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
