Update: Woman now charged with murder following death of child

A child under 10 was found dead in a home on Shoal Lake Cree Nation on the evening of May 23, prompting a homicide investigation.

SHOAL LAKE CREE NATION — Second update, May 30, 11:08 a.m.: After further investigation and consultation with Public Prosecutions, the accused, Karrena Young, is now charged with second-degree murder, after the suspicious death of a young child on Shoal Lake Cree Nation.

The previously laid manslaughter charge will be withdrawn at her next court appearance.

That appearance is scheduled to take place in Melfort Provincial Court on June 26, via video.

Update, May 26, 9 a.m.: As a result of the continued investigation, police report a 23-year-old suspect is facing charges.

Karrena Young, from Pakwaw Lake (Shoal Lake Cree Nation), has been charged with one count, manslaughter. She is scheduled to appear in Melfort Provincial Court May 26 via video. 

Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes continue to investigate.

Original post, May 24, 8:43 a.m.: Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes is investigating the suspicious death of a young child on Shoal Lake Cree Nation.

At approximately 7 p.m. on May 23, Carrot River RCMP received a report that a child under the age of 10 had been seriously injured at a residence on the First Nation.

Officers responded immediately and found an unresponsive child inside the home. Life-saving efforts were attempted, but the child was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

RCMP have deemed the death suspicious and have taken over the investigation. A suspect has been identified and is currently in custody.

Police say the suspect and the child were known to each other and that there is no elevated risk to public safety.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
