Update: La Ronge under evacuation order; alternate plan out of the area in place

Wildfire is moving fast and communities urged to evacuate immediately.

LA RONGE - Update: Evacuation has been ordered for La Ronge as wildfire has breached the airport and is fast moving. Individual in La Ronge, Air Ronge, Lac La Ronge IR, Napatak, Eagle Point, Lamp lake, Rabbit Creek, Potato Lake, Sucker River, Nemeiben, English Bay and Wadin Bay must start evacuation immediately, according to the SaskAlert website.

Individuals who can self-evacuate and find their own accommodations must use Highway 2 and register at the Days Inn in Prince Albert. Those who require transportation are to proceed to the JRMCC Centre in la Ronge and register. Individuals who require transportation on buses are allowed one small bag of personal belongings.

Original post: Evacuations from areas of wildfire in Saskatchewan continue to remain at about 8,000, says the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, even as more evacuations were ordered Monday.

The latest alert is one for Hall Lake, Clam Crossing and Sikachu, issued by the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. Residents who can self-evacuate and find their own accommodations are to use Highway 165 west to Beauval and make their way to Prince Albert to the Prince Albert Urban Centre. Two other areas were advised to evacuate to La Ronge.

In Monday's briefing by the SPSA, Steve Roberts, vice-president of operations, was asked how the people in La Ronge could be evacuated with highways closing and fires all around them. Roberts said the potential access plan for that community if Highway 2 is compromised and they cannot be guided through, they would move south until the met up with Highway 165 then travel west to access Highway 155, which runs south from Ile-a-la-Crosse.

Earlier Monday, an ordered evacuation was issued for Sucker River due to a wildfire that is threatening the community.

The online SaskAlert website says the wildfire is fast moving and individuals in Sucker River must start evacuation immediately.

Instructions are:

  • Individuals who can self-evacuate and find their own accommodations must use Highway 102 and proceed to JRMCC Centre in La Ronge and register.
  • If you require transportation proceed to the Band hall and register.
  • Individuals who require transportation on buses are allowed one small bag of personal belongings.
  • There are no pets allowed on the buses or in the shelters.

Sucker River 156C is a reserve of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band in Saskatchewan. It is at the mouth of the Nemeiben River on Lac la Ronge, about 230 kilometres (140 mi) north of Prince Albert. 

Chief Tammy Cook-Searson has advised residents to stay calm and drive safely to La Ronge or come to the Sucker River band hall to board a bus.

Also under an evacuation order are Wadin Bay, English Bay and the Neimeiben subdivision. Residents from those areas are also being directed toward the JRMCC centre in La Ronge by Northern Municipal Services.

  • Individuals that can self-evacuate and find their own accommodations must use Highway 102 and proceed to JRMCC Centre in La Ronge and register.
  • If you require transportation contact Northern Municipal Services.
  • Individuals who require transportation on buses are allowed one small bag of personal belongings.
