The Meeple Guild: A game that while simple did not grab the guild

There are a couple of cards that alter things just a bit – but frankly the cards need many more ‘game twisting concepts’ to breath a little interest into it.

YORKTON -  With July’s arrival we’ll offer up two reviews for the next two months to celebrate summer.

There are times when you review more than 50 games a year and have done it for many years that a game hits the table that just doesn’t move the needle in terms of interest at any level.

Taco Loco is one of those games.

Now to be fair it’s a tiny package card game. The cards are not even poker sized so that is actually another strike against this one if it was worthy of sleeving to protect the cards. Being off size means finding the right size sleeves would be a challenge.

From Treo Game Designers, artist Crocotame, and publisher Helvetiq via ilo307.com in Canada, Taco Loco is another of the myriad of filler games hitting shelves these days.

Here players are dealt a few cards which are played to the table to collectively create ‘a taco’.

If you complete the ‘perfect taco’ play to have the cards equal 11, you can give that taco to an opponent.

If you play so it stays under 11, it moves to the next player.

Can’t play – go over 11 – you keep the ‘taco’.

At game end each card you have counts against you.

There are a couple of cards that alter things just a bit – but frankly the cards need many more ‘game twisting concepts’ to breath a little interest into it.

The play here is monotonous at best – boring after a play or two.

The art might help if it were not sadly as bland as the play.

Saving the game just a bit is that this is one you are going to be looking at $20 or less to buy, so one evening over coffee with up to five players you get a good dollars per player per evening rate – when you compare it to a movie, junior hockey game or other rec options.

Still, there are better options to this one which just never quite satisfied the gaming appetite.
