Canora RCMP: Seven year old makes 37 unwarranted 911 calls

Police investigated and learned there was no emergency and that a seven-year-old child was responsible for making the 911 phone calls from his mom鈥檚 old phone.

Canora/Sturgis RCMP dealt with a stolen U-Haul, a mistaken e-transfer and a vehicle stuck in the sandpit at the Preeceville golf course.

CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 93 calls from June 19 to July 3, including:

911 misused

The Canora RCMP were dispatched on June 24 to multiple 911 hang up calls from an unregistered cell phone in Preeceville. A total of 37 phone calls were made with 12 calls being registered with 911 and nine of those being dispatched. Police used GPS co-ordinates from the cell phone to determine the location of where the phone calls were being made from. Police investigated and learned there was no emergency and that a seven-year-old child was responsible for making the 911 phone calls from his mom’s old phone. All cellphones, even those unregistered and without an assigned phone number, have the capability to call 911.

Other calls included:

  • ten 911 Act calls,
  • one abandoned vehicle,
  • two animal calls,
  • two assaults,
  • one arson,
  • one assault,
  • one assault with a weapon,
  • two break and enters,
  • one dangerous operation of a motor vehicle,
  • one disturbing the peace,
  • three failures to comply with conditions,
  • three false alarms, three frauds,
  • five Mental Health Act calls,
  • seven mischiefs,
  • one offender management,
  • one possession of property obtained by crime,
  • one roadside suspension,
  • four suspicious persons,
  • six thefts under $5,000,
  • one traffic collision,
  • 30 traffic offences,
  • one uttering threats,
  • four prisoners, and
  • two Child, Youth and Family Services Act calls.

Stolen, burned U-Haul found

On June 23, the Canora RCMP investigated a report of a burned-out U-Haul in a ditch in the RM of Sliding Hills. The trailer was reported stolen from the Humboldt area. Investigation is ongoing.

Honest caller reports mistaken e-transfer

The Canora RCMP investigated a report of a possible fraud in Sturgis on June 24. The caller reported receiving an e-transfer for $10,000 and a follow up phone call from the alleged scammer. Police investigated and determined the e-transfer was sent to the wrong phone number and that there were no intentions to defraud the caller. The caller did not keep the money and e-transferred it back to the rightful owner.

Power outage not a 911 call

On June 28, a woman called 911 to report a power outage. Police spoke to the caller and educated them on the proper use of 911.

Dog with neighbour, not stolen

A man called the Canora RCMP on June 28 reporting someone broke into his mom’s home in Preeceville and stole her dog. A second phone call was received with an update that no break and enter occurred and the dog was located with the neighbour.

Stuck at golf course

On June 29, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a report of a vehicle stuck in the sandpit at the Preeceville golf course. Police attended and detained a man and woman for impaired operation of a motor vehicle investigation. A woman was determined to be the driver of the vehicle and was issued a 72-hour driving suspension after failing a roadside breath sample in an alcohol screening device.
